2012-Salmon-Arm-Contests-61One of the most delightful jobs I have in the Carnival Business is to see all the incredible art and literature done by the children and youth in the Shooting Star Amusements’ Sponsored Contests at the Fairs. It is equally as difficult to pick only one winner in each category!

When you see these works of art, it is obvious the kids put in such tremendous effort to create these masterpieces. It makes me happy to know they are thinking of the fair and the Carnival rides, games and treats the whole time they are crafting or writing their stories.

SSA-10-Year-Anniversary-Logo-150x150“So…What’s New?”

As a Carnival Company we are always asked “What’s New?” Each year we add something new to our Carnival Midway, but it’s not always something to ride. It does take a long time to build a Carnival from scratch. If you were to Google how much it costs to buy a new ride, I am sure you would be shocked to see just how much they cost.

In our Ten year history we have done some growing up and had our fair share of the ups and downs of any thrilling roller coaster ride! When asked, “What’s New?” We can answer well, a new amusement ride, or a new amusement game or some new and interesting fair food.

2010-Quesnel-Parade-4-300x225Rolling into Quesnel with our Carnival Rides and Games has always been such a wonderful reward after a long journey from Langley. When we arrive in Quesnel we are welcomed with open arms by the great hard working Volunteer Festival Directors. It’s like coming home to see the family after a year away!

In small Northern Towns and Cities we really experience fully, the excitement of the families and kids who have waited all year for this moment to arrive! “Yay!! The Carnival Rides Mom! Look here comes the Rides!” Billy Barker Days is about to begin!

Parking Overnight at the Tourist Information Center in front of the Billy Barker Days Office, we rest up for set up because we have lots of things to do! The fun is about to begin.

2012-OAK-BAY-121Who had the weather on their to-do list? How about this Junuary? I am very superstitious about the weather; I never check it before we travel. There is nothing we can do about it, we can’t change it and I always hold onto hope for sunshine – no matter what the forecast shows. I figure if my hat is wet, it’s raining. Sometimes, you just gotta have a little faith.

We have certainly travelled with our Carnival this month! From Langley to Vancouver Island for the Oak Bay Tea Party and up to Lumby and through to Kamloops before we head back to Vancouver to play the Point Grey Fiesta.

Tired of the rising cost of fuel? Imagine how many trucks we need to transport our Amusements from the West Coast to your community! Fuel costs today are our biggest enemy, followed right after the HST. Unfortunately we have to include some of this increase in our ride ticket prices.

February 25, 2012 – Calling all Creative People

Carousel-Horse_99_13-199x300We are currently finalizing our Prize Book Contests for our Agricultural Fairs; Vancouver Island Exhibition, Bulkley Valley Exhibition and the Salmon Arm Fall Fair.

I count my blessings that I am fortunate enough to be able to create things like this for little people. Coming up with new ideas each year that interest kids and inspire their creativity is such fun. Prize Book Contest brainstorming reminds me of how much I loved to create things when I was a child. Truthfully I have not outgrown my love of “making stuff” !

For 2012, we have added a brand new Contest for kids aged 6 to 10 years old, and for Youth Age 11 to 17. Watch for more details at our participating fairs and festivals coming soon.
