Salmon Arm Has It All Throughout The Summer

August 25, 2014

Halfway between Vancouver and Calgary nestles what just may be BC’s ideal place for summer: Salmon Arm. Located at the mouth of the Salmon River as it flows into Shuswap Lake, the town and surrounding area has everything: beaches, houseboats, waterskiing, fishing, camping, hiking, hotels, art, golf, dining, shopping and, of course, the annual Salmon Arm Fair.

Everyone Loves the Shuswap

After a simple and gorgeous roadtrip, or an easy flight, suddenly the great Shuswap Lake comes into view. This stunning visual backdrop continues for miles and is a Mecca for vacationing families. If you live in BC, no doubt you know several people who head here every summer to go boating on the Shuswap. After all, Salmon Arm has gorgeous summer weather that isn’t as hot as the Okanagan. From Canada Day past Labour Day, people flock to Shuswap Lake with their boats, trailers and motorhomes.

In Salmon Arm itself, there are glorious beaches like Sunnybrae and Canoe, ideal for families.

And as you head out along the lake’s edge, there are tons of places renting out what many people see as the Shuswap’s trademark: houseboats. There are no words to describe a weeklong houseboating vacation and watching the sunset each night over the lake and mountains.

Attractions In and Around Salmon Arm

Did you know that Salmon Arm is home to the longest wooden wharf in North America?

Or that on the third weekend of August there is the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues festival?

Or that there are incredible wineries all around the area?

The Salmon Arm Arts Centre is pumping with activity all summer with Family Saturdays, Summer Art Camp for kids of all ages through the end of August, and “Wednesday On The Wharf” outdoor concerts at the gazebo in Marine Park, right by the lake.

The fun doesn’t stop as soon as school goes back., there are two BC fairs in the Interior. The  IPE held on Labour Day weekend and then the fabulous Salmon Arm Fall Fair the weekend following.  We are often asked, ‘How much are wristbands at the IPE?’  and , ‘Are there Salmon Arm Fairwristbands for the Salmon Arm Fair too?’  So you and the family can make the most of the amazing carnival experiences that Salmon Arm has to offer.

The famous Salmon Arm Fair that has been staged every year since 1897. From rides to mini-donuts, from wranglers to hayrides, from entertainers to competitions, this fair has something for everyone.

Of course, this year, there is no guarantee that the Teachers’ Federation and the BC Government will have settled their dispute before September. So, you may as well think about ideas for extending your summer break.
